Four cheerleaders bring spirit to help Team Georgia win Border Bowl

For the first time in five years, Team Georgia won the Border Bowl this past weekend. Even better, four local cheerleaders helped them to the title, stunting, cheering, and chanting them on to the win.

Tryouts for Team Georgia Cheer for Border Bowl IX were held in September, and four seniors from Swainsboro High were selected to the final roster: Madison Williams, Malaysia Lockett, Caitlyn Fleming, and Melanie Purcell.

They traveled to Lucy C. Laney Memorial Stadium in Augusta this past Saturday, January 8, for the event put on by WJBF News Channel 6, The Augusta Chronicle, and News/Talk WGAC. There, they were coached by Mollie Spurlock, head cheer coach at Lincoln County High School.

The game featuring elite players from Georgia and South Carolina began at 1 p.m. By the end of the fourth quarter, Georgia had gone up 16–0 and solidified the win.
