This week on the schedule for the Georgia Southern Eagles was a big-time conference matchup with South Alabama. South Alabama had a 6-2 overall record coming in so it was setting up to be a tough one, but the Eagles felt like they had the edge coming off of a bye week.
This game got off to possibly the best start you could have, on South Alabama’s second play they threw a pass and it was intercepted and taken to the house by Khadry Jackson to put the Eagles up 7-0. The defense then forced a punt. On the fourth play of the drive they handed it to Jalen White and he ran it all the way 54 yards for the touchdown.
The Eagles finally gave up some points on the next drive as South Alabama cut the lead to 14-7. The next offensive drive for the Eagles was productive again as they had a long nine play drive and capped it off with a Kyle Vantrease pass to Derwin Burgess Jr. of 16 yards. South Alabama scored on their next drive and made it 21-14. Both teams added field goals and at the half it was 24-17 Eagles.
Coming out of the half it was sloppy as both teams threw interceptions, but it was the Eagles who scored next on a Vantrease pass to Jjay Mcafee to extend their lead to 31-17. Things went south for the Eagles fast though. The Eagles couldn’t hold on as they gave up touchdowns on three straight South Alabama drives and the offense couldn’t move the ball at all. The Eagles were down 38-31 late, but couldn’t convert on fourth down and they fell short.
This one is a tough pill to swallow because it felt like it was Southern’s game all along. The Eagles are still 5-4 and just one win away from being bowl eligible, so there’s a lot left on the table. This week they play on Thursday, November 10 at 7:30 P.M. at Louisiana.
