Georgia Southern falls short at UAB

The Georgia Southern Eagles came in flying high off of an upset victory over Nebraska, they needed to turn it around quickly to get ready for a very good UAB team. UAB was 1-1 coming into the game, this was a non-conference game.

The Blazers got the scoring going on a 16 play drive punching it in on a one yard touchdown run, making it 7-0. The Eagles offense couldn’t get anything going and UAB’s offense sustained another long drive, cashing in on a dump pass to make it 14-0. After a dormant offense, Georgia Southern was stopped again, the Eagles defense gave up a huge 32-yard touchdown run.

The Eagles offense finally got going on a much needed long drive. Derwin Burgess took the reverse from the seven and walked it into the end zone making it 21-7. The score stayed 21-7 to the half and into the third quarter until GSU running back Jalen White made a 70 yard run for the touchdown. Heading into the fourth the score was 21-14 UAB.

The first play of the fourth was a 27 yard touchdown rush by UAB running back DeWayne McBride. Even though it was getting late the Eagles were fighting and scored again on another Jalen White touchdown and we had ourselves a ball game 28-21.

The Eagles defense came up huge with a stop to get it back to the offense, but while driving the Eagles threw an interception and UAB took over at the GSU 32-yard line. UAB’s McBride ran it in again to put the game out of reach. The final score was 35-21.

This is a tough loss for the Eagles against a very good UAB team. The Eagles shot themselves in the foot with three interceptions, but the offense still produced 418 total yards. The schedule doesn’t get any easier as the Eagles host Ball State, Saturday, September 24th at 6:00 P.M.
