Georgia Southern Football Dismantles Morgan State

The Georgia Southern Eagles started out the Clay Helton era in a big way this past weekend defeating the Morgan State Bears, 59-7. Eagles transfer quarterback Kyle Vantrease got off to a phenomenal start in Statesboro throwing for 367 yards with four passing touchdowns. The rushing game also played a huge factor, running wild for 137 yards dispersed between a plethora of players.

The Eagles first touchdown of the season came on a pass that ended up in the hands of running back OJ Arnold. The game would stay competitive for a while as the Eagles added a field goal and surrendered a touchdown, the score was 10-7.

Then, Junior defensive back Tyler Bride intercepted a Morgan State pass to start another Georgia Southern scoring drive. The Eagles would make their way down the field before WR Derwin Burgess made a spectacular full body extension catch for a touchdown. The Eagles took a 17-7 lead into the half.

I don’t know what happened in that locker room, but the Eagles were a different team in the second half. Right out of the gates in the second half WR Khaleb Hood took a screen pass 48 yards for an Eagles score, extending it to 24-7.

After a stop by the Eagles defense the offense produced another long offensive drive, finishing it on a five yard touchdown run by Jaylen White. This wouldn’t be White’s last touchdown as he would keep running hard and on the very next drive add another touchdown to his stat line.

Even though the score was 38-7, the defense didn’t let up a bit forcing another interception leading to an Eagles touchdown on a throw from Vantrease to Jeremy Singleton. The Offense kept rolling late in this one finishing with the final score of 59-7. The defense forced a total of four turnovers to go along with this massive offensive outburst and that is a great combination.

The Eagles get off to a great start, but face a huge test this week on the road at Nebraska at 7:30 P.M.
