Georgia Southern Football Preview: A New Era in Statesboro

By Justin Gray

The Georgia Southern Football program is excited for a new era under Head Coach Clay Helton. Helton has coached at Duke, Houston, Memphis, and the University of Southern California. USC is the only place he was the Head Coach and his tenure lasted 7 seasons. The Eagles also hired new coordinators in Bryan Ellis as Offensive Coordinator and Will Harris as Defensive Coordinator.

The Eagles hope to rebuild a program that embodies the success they have in the past and turn them into a powerhouse once again. In 2021, they finished with a 3-9 record losing to both rivals Appalachian State and Georgia State.

The Eagles are now led on offense by Senior transfer Quarterback Kyle Vantrease and their heavy rushing attack of Senior Amare Jones and Junior Jalen White. Last year the offense wasn’t as strong as they have been in the past, but hope to have a resurgence with the offensive help that signed and transferred in.

The defense last year was ranked 102 nationally, but this year’s looks a lot more solid. Last year, the Eagle defense was injury plagued, but are completely healthy for the 2022 season. They are led by Senior Middle Linebacker Todd Bradley-Glenn and Nose Tackle Kristian Varner.

The Eagles play a tough schedule with a non-conference Power five program in Nebraska. The Eagles kick off play September 3, at 6:00 P.M. at Paulson Stadium in Statesboro.
