Georgia Southern Outlasts Old Dominion On The Road

By: Justin Gray

The Eagles of Georgia Southern are having quite the season, building their resume with wins over Nebraska and James Madison. They have done so by having one of the most explosive offenses in College Football. On defense, at times they have struggled, but when the game is on the line they are pretty clutch.

This week they had another opportunity against a really good Old Dominion team. Old Dominion is 3-3, but have had some good wins including Virginia Tech and an undefeated Coastal Carolina. The Eagles Quarterback Kyle Vantrease is second in the nation in passing yards and has dominated nearly every team he has faced, but this time it was the running game that got the job done.

The Monarchs got out to a 3-0 lead, but that changed quickly when Vantrease hit Amare Jones for a touchdown making it 7-3. It was a defensive battle until there was 0:22 on the clock and Jalen White took it in from the three yard line to go up 14-3 at the half.

Old Dominion got the ball after halftime and marched right down the field and scored to cut it to 14-10. When the Eagles got the ball back they drove it down, but were faced with a tough 3rd and four at the 30 yard line. Gerald Green took the handoff, got the first down and more, he took it to the end zone to go up 21-10. Old Dominion wasted great field position twice and settled for two field goals at the end of the third quarter.

Going into the fourth quarter it was 21-16 and the Eagles needed to step up and finish it and they did. They drove it down the field and capped it off with a three-yard Gerald Green touchdown run. Old Dominion didn’t have any quit in them though, driving it down and running it into the end zone to make it 28-23. The Eagles got one final stop to pick up a huge Sun Belt Conference win. The offense was great again but like I mentioned it was the running game. Jalen White rushed for 138 yards and a touchdown and Gerald Green had 94 yards along with two touchdowns. Vantrease did what he needed to do being incredibly efficient, completing 22 of 27 with 192 yards and a touchdown. The defense gave up a lot of yards but held Old Dominion to several field goals and limited the amount of points they gave up. This win improves the Eagles to 5-3 heading into the off week. After the off week, the Eagles host South Alabama at 4:00 P.M.
