Icons Elite win Who’s B.E.S.T. Invitational

This area’s basketball talent isn’t by happenstance; rather, it’s a product of hard work and gelling through countless times suited up and hitting the court together over many years of recreational, school, and travel basketball. Fred and Ced Seabrough, Tyler Kelly, Derrick Jones, DeMonte Smith, Juan Brown, Alfonzo Durden, Manny Hackett, and Flex Washington make up Icons Elite, a travel team coached by Derrick Jones Sr. and Shae Kelly. The team traveled to North Augusta, South Carolina a few weekends ago and came home champions of the Who’s B.E.S.T. Invitational put on by KB Sports.

The tournament was held March 19-21 at North Augusta Park & Rec in South Carolina. The 11th and 12th grade boys division, in which Icons Elite competed, saw 11 other teams turn out for the premier event—but none would match the local team’s competitiveness.

Icons Elite breezed through the opening day on March 20, beating OFT from Norcross 95-40 in Game 1 and upending HoopDream Skills Academy 85-40 in Game 2.

On Championship Sunday, the competition got increasingly tougher, indicated best by the closer scores. Icons Elite beat Caesar Elite 47-40 in Game 3, then squeaked out a 74-71 win against HoopDream Skills again in Game 4 to stay alive. Tyler Kelly is credited with hitting the game-winning buzzer beater to put the Icons in the championship game against SSE, who ultimately fell 80-40 as the local boys went undefeated en route to bringing the hardware back to Swainsboro.

Icons Elite will next play in the Georgia Cup III in Suwanee on April 23-25. Look for results in a later edition of The Crossroads Chronicle.
