Mr. John Carl Samples Sr. was born January 16, 1926 in Twin City (Graymont) to the late Robert Samples and Elsie Samples. He joined the Army, where he served his country proudly until his honorable discharge in 1946. He married Jessie D. Strobridge on February 4, 1947, and they lived in Swainsboro and raised their children.
Mr. Samples built a successful business as a carpet installer as a means to support his family. After retirement, he could often be found on his porch chatting with family and visitors, telling stories about the “old days.” The simplest pleasures in life, such as hunting, farming, horseback riding, and fishing, brought him the greatest joy. Mr. Samples was a lifetime member of Saint Phillip Lodge No. 96, serving 70 years, and was a former member of the L. J. Riggs Holy Royal Arch Chapter No. 24. He was a member of Greater Saint James Missionary Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, John Samples Jr.; daughter, Linda Samples; brother, Willie Samples; and sisters, Rosetta Samples, Mamie Samples, Marie White, and Dora Samples.
Survivors include his wife of 74 years, Jessie D. Samples of Swainsboro; sons, Jerome Samples of Macon and Christopher Samples (Roxanne) of Swainsboro; daughters, Mary Strobridge and Nancy Shimoyama, both of Swainsboro, Andrea Samples-Elliott (Steven) of Loganville, and Sophia Neal of Swainsboro; daughter-in-law, Frances Samples; and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.
