Jones leads Tigers in region win

Derrick Jones scored 15 of his team-high 18 points in the first half as the Swainsboro Tigers put away East Laurens early to stay undefeated (9-0) in region play. Swainsboro (12-1) led 46-28 at the half and cruised to an easy 87-51 victory behind Jones’ terrific play and remain the No. 2 ranked team in the state behind Pace Academy (17-1).

Swainsboro had 12 of their 13 rostered players score in this balanced offensive attack as the regular season creeps to a close. A weekend tilt against Jeff Davis was rescheduled due to COVID-19 issues with the Yellow Jackets as the season will be extended by another week for teams to catch up on games that were postponed. Swainsboro will host Vidalia and Bacon County this Friday and Saturday before closing out the regular season with a home game against Jeff Davis on Saturday, February 13. The region tournament will begin the following week.

In the girls’ game, the Lady Tigers played an intense battle that went down to the buzzer, losing 45-43 as East Laurens got it done late. Tanyia Williams led Swainsboro with 12 points. Swainsboro is 3-6 in the region and has some work to do in the region tournament to represent Region 2-AA as one of the four seeds in the state playoffs.
