March Madness: Sweet sixteen is set after wild weekend

By Justin Gray

When March comes around, sports fans and even some non-sports fans get excited for “March Madness”. March Madness is a 64 team tournament amongst college basketball teams that holds some of the best upsets in all of sports. What makes this so fun is people fill out tournament brackets in hopes to win the $1,000,000 prize if they predict the perfect bracket which is highly unlikely.

This year there were over 20,000,000 brackets made on ESPN. The field was set last Sunday or “Selection Sunday” and the games began Thursday around lunch. This was one of the wildest tournaments we’ve ever had. The unlikeliest of upsets happened when 16-seed Fairleigh Dickinson took down one-seed Purdue, this is only the second 16 seed to ever beat a one-seed, the only other was UMBC over Virginia in 2018.

Fifteen seed Princeton was also upset minded as they took down two-seed Arizona and to make it even crazier they took down 7-seed Missouri in the second round to move on to the “Sweet Sixteen”. 13-seed Furman vs four-seed Virginia was the second game of the tournament and Furman hit a shot at the buzzer to win.

After this wild weekend the “Sweet Sixteen” is set and it consists of (1) Alabama, (5) San Diego State, (6) Creighton, (15) Princeton, (4) Tennessee, (9) FAU, (1) Houston, (5) Miami (FL), (2) Texas, (3) Xavier, (4) UCONN, (8) Arkansas, (2) UCLA, and (3) Gonzaga. Four of these games are on Thursday, March 23 starting at 6:30 P.M. and the other four are on Friday, March 24 starting at 6:30 P.M. all on TBS or CBS.
