During the Wiregrass Chapter’s monthly meeting held Thursday, October 14, at New China Restaurant at 6:30 p.m., author and historian Lee McDowell presented a program on former presidents who were also military officers at one time.
As part of this program, McDowell mentioned and told historical stories on each president who had been a military officer, ranging from George Washington through George Bush. He brought with him on his more than 200-mile trip from below Jacksonville, Florida (with his wife) several copies of his books that he had authored, all of which were purchased by members of the local SAR chapter.
President Wilder Smith Jr. introduced him to the group as the guest speaker.
After the program, Compatriot Alton Reynolds presented President Smith with the Chapter Flag Streamer received for participation in the 240th Anniversary Commemoration of the Second Siege of Augusta on September 18, 2021.
Future events were discussed, then Chaplain Emory Fennell led in the SAR Recessional and a closing prayer.
President Smith presided over the meeting, which had 18 members and guests in attendance.
Additionally, Chaplain Fennell opened with the blessing of the food and led the assembled in the Pledge of Allegiance and the SAR Pledge.
