More than 50 turn out for third banquet



The Brier Creek Revolutionary War Battlefield Association Inc. (BCRWBA) held its third annual banquet this past Friday inside the social hall of First United Methodist Church in Sylvania, and more than 50 people attended the occasion.


The highlight of the occasion was a presentation by Dr. John Derden. He updated the assembled on the Brier Creek Revolutionary War Battlefield Association Inc., along with the future plans for the battlefield in coordination with the Department of Natural Resources and Tuckahoe Plantation.


Jason West was the featured speaker for the evening, and he presented a program on Button Gwinnett, one of the three Georgia signers of the Declaration of Independence.


In other news:


President Hammond beckoned forward member Betsy Sternau to receive the Brier Creek Battlefield Legacy Lifetime Member Plaque as well as J.C. Lewis Ford representative Scott Lewis to receive the Georgia Militia Lifetime Member Plaque.


Next, President Hammond asked member John Fitzner, Sue Pittman, and Sonny Pittman to come forward and receive Paris Mill Lifetime Member Certificates.


President Stephen Hammond called the March 4 event to order at 6:30 p.m., then Commander Steve Burke presented the colors. Compatriot Tommy Christopher led the Pledge to the U.S. flag and the Georgia Society’s senior vice president of the Sons of the American Revolution to bring greetings. Compatriot Bernard Martin delivered the invocation, the blessing, and the benediction.


Plans are already underway for the fourth annual banquet. Tentatively, the next year’s event is set for March 3, 2023.
