Swainsboro-Emanuel County Recreation Department put two first-place winners and two second-place finishers on the podium at the 2022 GRPA Class B/C State Track & Field Championship last weekend.
KJ Coleman won the 9- to 10-year-old boys’ 50 meter dash while Demetrius Cuyler won the 11- to 12-year-old boys’ softball throw.
Runners-up included: Zakiya Parrish in the 7- to 8-year-old girls’ softball throw and Aa’Caylah Murphy in the 13- to 14-year-old girls’ 100 meter dash.
Coleman also finished fourth in his age division’s 100 meter dash, and Murphy picked up two more quality finishes, fifth place in both the running long jump and the softball throw for her age division.
Other athletes finished well at the state meet.
Legend Williams took third in the 7- to 8-year-old boys’ softball throw; Kali Brown placed fourth in the 11- to 12-year-old girls’ 400 meter dash; and Genesis Reese finished fifth in the 9- to 10-year-old girls’ running long jump.
Caden Watson placed fifth in two events, the 100 meter dash for boys ages 11 and 12. Javari Williams earned fifth as well in the standing long jump for boys ages 13 and 14.
Kimiya Freeman placed sixth in the running long jump and seventh in the shot put for her division, the 13- and 14-year-old girls.
Both Franklyn Barnes and Treasure Phillips earned seventh place finishes of their own. Barnes competed in the 13- and 14-year-old boys’ running long jump, and Phillips competed in the 13- and 14-year-old girls’ softball throw.
Finally, McKinley Walden and Demauri Roberts placed eighth in their respective events, the 11- to 12-year-old girls’ standing long jump and the 13- to 14-year-old boys’ softball throw.
The state meet held in Jefferson on May 6 and May 7 brought a formal conclusion to this year’s track and field season.
