The Skunk Brigade, made up of members of the Wiregrass, Brier Creek and Little River Chapters, Georgia Society Sons of the American Revolution, traveled to Saint Simons Island on Saturday, April 20, 2024, to attend the 246th Anniversary of the Frederica Naval Action that was held on April 18-19, 1776. Those presenting wreaths and attending where: Steve Burke – Four Rivers, Don Bazemore – Brier Creek, Dess Smith III – Patrick Carr, Jerry Lawson – Wiregrass, Lee Herron – Mill Creek, Bernard Martin – Brier Creek Artillery, Alton McCloud – Little River, Alton Reynolds – Four Rivers, Gary Mason – Fall Line, Alton Reynolds – East Fall Line Continentals, Bernard Martin II, Benjamin Martin, Cam Quick, Walker Quick. There were over 50 wreath presenters, five cannons, and 25 militia firing their flintlock rifles. The National Society Combined Color Guard was led by Commander Scott Collins as they presented and retrieved the Colors. After the three-round volley by the Elijah Clark Militia, Brier Creek Militia and the Brier Creek Artillery, taps was played on his bugle by Otis F. Putnam III of the Marshes of Glynn Chapter SAR. After the ceremony, the Schooner Lynx (British) fired several rounds at the Brier Creek Artillery who in turn fired at least 12 rounds at the British Ship.
