Some members of the Skunk Brigade attended the Georgia Society Sons of the American Revolution Annual Board of Management meeting in Atlanta at the Hilton Hotel on February 7 and 8. On Friday night after the banquet, Skunkers Lee Herron, Steve Burke, Dess Smith, Bill Tankersley, Emil Decker, Bill Floyd and a few other Skunkers surprised the 45th and 46th newest Skunkers with a ceremony to induct them and present them with their new skunk hats. Skunker Lee Herron presented both Steven Hinson of the Marshes of Glynn Chapter and David Sikes of the Button Gwinnett Chapter with their hats and then read the poem that Lee had written for this occasion. The Skunk Brigade was formed about 14 years ago by Steve Burke. Steve makes the skunk hats out of “roadkill skunks” and it takes three skunks to make one hat. Steve has had some help from

Skunker Lee Herron the last two years but if you look at how many skunks it has taken to make 46 skunk hats, that’s 138 roadkill skunks. The first Skunk hat was given to the Late President Wilder Smith, Jr. of the Wiregrass Chapter and the 44th skunk hat was given to SAR member Kholson Lee Bull of the Robert Forsyth Chapter.
