Skunk Brigade members attended the Georgia Society Sons of the American Revolution Awards Banquet on February 6, at the Hilton Hotel in Atlanta. The banquet was held in the Hunnicutt Ballroom with about 100 in attendance. With President Bill Floyd presiding, numerous individual awards were given out. Receiving Georgia Society individual awards from the Wiregrass Chapter were President Steve Burke and Dess Smith III being awarded with the Silver Roger Sherman Medal with an Oak Leaf Cluster. Receiving awards from the Little River Chapter were Alton Oneal McCloud being awarded with the Patriot Grave Marking Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster #1. Alton also was recognized as a George Washington Fellow in appreciation for his support of the George Washington Endowment Fund. Receiving awards from the Brier Creek Chapter were President Lee Herron being awarded with the Lafayette Volunteer Service Medal. The highlight of the night was the awarding of the Patriot Medal. The Patriot Medal is awarded only by a State Society and is the highest award given for service at the state or chapter level. It may only be received once and represents long, faithful and outstanding service. For the year 2025, Richard Lee Herron, along with three other Compatriots, received the “Patriot Medal” for exceptional service to the Georgia Society.
