Spring has returned to the countryside. The sweet smell of honeysuckle fills the warm night air. A pair of devoted bluebirds are building a nest in the tall magnolia tree by mama’s bedroom window.

Thick coats and heavy winter garments have been disposed of for another year, while short sleeve shirts are beginnings to appear once again.

The wild plum and cherry trees are blooming in the flowering woods near our house and the welcoming warmth of the sun gives the earth added energy, expectation and life.

It is a perfect time for front porch sitting and reminiscing about the past and what may happen in the future. During those quiet times, we tend to think of our loved ones who are no longer with us but will always be close to our hearts. But we also rejoice that new life has come into our lives with a new generation of little ones that will determine our future.

Winter is dead and gone and we have come to realize just how short life rally is. We try to see God’s face in the beauty and handywork all around us and quickly realize that with our limited small minds and intellect, we are at a disadvantage. We can only accept and appreciate his gift of forgiveness, unearned grace and love.

From the front porch seat, I hear the distant echo of a tractor breaking land for Spring planting. The rich earth has the feel, smell and warmth of energy and new life that is ready to accept the seeds that will nourish our bodies and bless our souls at harvest time.

Yes, Spring has returned to the countryside!
