Swainsboro High School honored Black History Month with a special program on Friday, February 7, centered around the theme “Heroes Among Us.” The event highlighted the extraordinary impact of everyday individuals within the community and throughout history.

Senior Bryson Tarver and junior Terralynn Brinson served as the Master/Mistress of Ceremonies. JaRon Johnson welcomed the assembled seniors and guests, while the JROTC Color Guard—Cadets July Eskew, Travis Smith, Sha’Riya McClendon, and Dimya Snelling—presented the colors. Senior Braylan Thompson performed a stirring rendition of the National Anthem on his trumpet.

As part of the program, sophomore Dei’Vion Davis and senior Akira Marion recited a poem reflecting the event’s theme. Junior Brittany Waters delivered a heartfelt solo of Amazing Grace, followed by senior D’Andre Smith, who introduced the guest speaker, Chief Deputy Nicholas Robertson of the Emanuel County Sheriff’s Office. Robertson delivered an inspiring message on overcoming adversity and refusing to be defined by circumstances.

To close the program, SHS Principal Brandon Andrews shared final remarks, and sophomore Zaylin Lee and Mr. Roosevelt Young led the audience in singing the Black National Anthem. Following the event, guests and participants enjoyed a breakfast reception in the Media Center.

The Black History Month Committee included Alexandria Walden, Linda Kelly, Veronica Cheers, Shayla Coleman, Denene Favors, Debra Austin, Luci McNeely, Jodi Singletary, and Kristen Blanford. Assisting as ushers were senior Rentavious Brown and juniors Hayden Burke and Kayleiana Swilley. Special music was provided by SHS Class of 2024 graduate Caleb Long.

Swainsboro High School extends its gratitude to all participants and attendees for making this celebration of Black history, culture, and resilience a memorable occasion.
