Houston County High School’s literary team has clinched their third state title! They are the 5A State Literary Champions three years in a row! There are few things as rewarding as watching a team grow, evolve, and ultimately reach the pinnacle of success. But when that success is achieved not just once, but over the course of multiple seasons, it’s something truly special. The team is coached by Talmadge “Tee” Smith Jr and Melanie Davis. Tee is the son of Bonnie Rose Smith and the late Talmadge Smith Sr. of Kite and is the Choral Director and the Literary Team head coach at Houston County High School. Last year, they won back-to-back 6A Literary State Championships. This year they won the 5A state Literary title making them Threepeat state champions. The team competes in Region and State events in March of each year and the events that place first move to state in their individual events. The team with the highest points at the end of the day wins the state title. Literary events include Boys and Girls Vocal Solo, Vocal Trio, Vocal Quartet, Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation and Duo Interpretation, Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking and International Extemporaneous Speaking, Literary Analysis Essay, Argumentative Essay and Personal Essay.

The Literary team is a GHSA-sponsored fine-arts “sport”. Tripp Smith, son of Tee and Stephanie Smith, was in the quartet that won first place last year and this year at state. Smith is a freshman at Houston County High School.
