This month’s edition of Georgia’s Champion, a monthly e-newsletter of Special Olympics Georgia (SOGA), includes an article featuring Elease Turner as the “Volunteer of the Month” for June. Ansley Bonner, Volunteer and Event Manager for SOGA, states that she would not be able to get through the Summer Games without Ms. Turner’s help because “… she always is so willing to jump into wherever I need her to. I look forward to seeing her each year.”

Elease Turner, a life-long resident of Emanuel County and a retired Special Education teacher, is a member of the SOGA’s State Summer Games Organizing Committee and has been a dedicated volunteer for over 10 years at the games hosted by Emory University every May. Over 2,000 athletes, coaches, and unified partners spend the three-day weekend “working hard and playing hard.”

This year, the athletes competed in athletics, cheerleading, flag football, gymnastics, soccer, soccer skills, swimming, table tennis, tennis, and volleyball. As always, they had an “amazing” weekend!

Those who know Ms. Turner can confirm the writer’s description of her is no exaggeration: “… greeting everyone with her million-dollar smile and has a wonderful personality.” Another local retired Special Education teacher remarked, “That describes Elease. She certainly deserves this recognition.”

Ms. Turner says she will probably continue to volunteer at the games as long as she has good health and can drive in the Atlanta traffic.
