Unicetine Laverne Lewis, age 93, entered into rest on Saturday, August 2, 2025. Memorial service will be held Thursday, August 7, at 12 p.m. at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
Unicetine was born April 12, 1932, in Emanuel County, the fourth of six children born to Pearline and Clark Williams. She graduated with honors from Jenkins County Training High School in Millen. Years later, Unicetine furthered her studies at Phillips College where she obtained an Associate Degree in Business Administration. After graduating from high school, she married Wesley T. Lewis of Emanuel County. Wesley joined the U.S. Army and went on to pursue a military career where he reached the rank of Master Sergeant. Unicetine embraced her life as a military wife and mother while traveling with her husband both domestically and internationally. After returning stateside, Unicetine, along with her husband and their children, settled in Augusta where she later spent many years employed in the retail industry and being involved in volunteer work with her church and the community. Unicetine was a strong and resilient woman who provided a nurturing and supportive presence to their nine children. Her faith was the foundation of her motherhood, raising her children in the knowledge of the Lord with unwavering love and dedication. A faithful member of The Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Augusta, Unicetine’s spiritual devotion remained firm throughout her life. As a dedicated volunteer at her church, she served in several capacities, including Eucharistic Minister, President of the Parish Council of Catholic Women, and she was a member of the church offering counting team. Unicetine also volunteered with the United Service Organizations (“USO”), the Girl Scouts, and served as President of the Flower Club at the Senior Citizens Community Center. She also spent time expressing her creative side by writing short stories for her family to read. Unicetine also enjoyed the opportunities to participate as an extra in the movie, “Fried Green Tomatoes” and the TV show, “I’ll Fly Away”. Mrs. Lewis is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wesley T. Lewis; daughter, Joyce Lewis; grandson, Marcus Lewis; and five siblings.
Mrs. Lewis leaves to cherish her memories and legacy with her loving children, Linda Ann Dumas, Ignatius Lewis, Zenzel Lewis, Schewislzer Lewis, Laverne Lewis Gaskins (Kent), Laryce Lewis Farrell (Ken), Gather Lewis (Angie) and Yezzet Lewis Thomas (James); grandchildren, Myah Gaskins (Josh), Aaron Dumas, Jasmine Gaskins, Adrianna Sanders (Darius), Darryl Lockett, James Thomas, Jr., Frank Thomas (Sandra), Jaylin Thomas and Chioke Farrell; a host of great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
