The Veterans at the Library held their weekly meeting at the Calvary Methodist Church Monday, April 29, at 9:15 a.m. With Chair John Tapley presiding, they had 46 in attendance. The speaker was Joyce Fennell. Joyce’s presentation was about “Rosie the Riveter”. The term “Rosie the Riveter” was inspired by the title of a popular song written in 1942. Rosie the Riveter was a fictional character who represented the many women who entered the workforce during World War II. Women served in so many important ways during the war. They were war production workers, essential civilian workers, and women also came forward as volunteers and we could not have won World War II without them. During World War II, Swainsboro had a camouflage net factory at the old Swainsboro High School gymnasium located on West Church Street. Joyce’s mother worked in the shipyard in Savannah as a welder. Several of our veterans had family members that worked during WWII as part of the Riveter’s. If you want more information about this, please call Joyce at 478-494-4974. Chair Johnny called on Shari Watt to report on the success of the Herrington Homestead Fishing Derby and Scotty Nasworthy about the upcoming Veterans Cup Golf Tournament. Veterans were fed grits, biscuits with sausage, fruit, muffins and orange juice, grape juice, cranberry juice and coffee. Thanks to the Calvary Methodist for a great breakfast.
