The Veterans at the Library held their weekly meeting at the Franklin Memorial Library Monday, June 10, at 9:15 a.m. With Chair John Tapley presiding, they had 48 in attendance. Breakfast was served by Sheri Watt to include grits, breakfast casserole, watermelon, birthday cupcakes (Veteran Pete Boatright, 93), cranberry juice, grape juice, orange juice and coffee. Two new veterans attended the meeting, Katrina Nicole Stevens and Rob Dale Heard. Katrina served in the U.S. Army from March 2007 to October 2017, in the 1st, 41st Field Artillery. She served overseas during OLF and OEF and was also stationed at Fort Lee, VA and Fort Stewart, GA. Stevens obtained the rank of SGT. Rob served in the U.S. Navy from May 31, 1987, to June 01, 2007, in the Gulf/IRAQ. He served PT Morgan, CA, Whidbey, WA, Camp Pendleton, CA, NAS Pensacola, FL and NAS Jacksonville, FL. Heard obtained the rank of E-6. Watt introduced the speaker, Lynn Brinson from the Emanuel Medical Center, who talked about the “Georgia Heart Program”. Brinson discussed how they could sign up to send their Georgia Income Tax money directly to the Emanuel Medical Center instead of to the State of Georgia. This is a great way to support the local hospital with your Georgia personal income tax. For more information about this, please call Lynn at 478-299-0088. Chair Johnny talked about June 14, U.S. Flag Day. All veterans will meet at the City Square Friday, June 14, at 9:30 a.m. for a short ceremony to honor the U.S. Flag. Also, don’t forget that we should all celebrate “Women Veterans Recognition Day’ on Wednesday, June 12, to observe the Anniversary of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act. This Act was an effort to honor the work of women in the United States Armed Forces and recognize the unique challenges that they have faced.
