The Veterans at the Library held their weekly meeting Monday morning, May 20, at 9:15 a.m. at the Franklin Memorial Library. With Chair John Tapley presiding, they had 44 in attendance. Breakfast was served by the Beta Sigma Phi consisting of breakfast casserole, muffins, mixed fruit, cranberry juice, grape juice, orange juice and coffee. Chair Johnny asked Veteran Dess Smith III to introduce the speaker of the morning, District Attorney Tripp Fitzner. Fitzner talked about his office and what they do for the Middle Judicial Circuit of Georgia that serves Candler, Emanuel, Jefferson, Toombs and Washington Counties. After his presentation, he took a great number of questions that the veterans asked him. Chair Johnny then talked about the great success of the 1st Annual Veterans Cup Golf Tournament and plans for next year’s event. They hope to have next year’s event again started by a six-pounder Field Gun Cannon shot by Commander Steve Burke, President of the Wiregrass Chapter Georgia Society Sons of the American Revolution. Tapley then discussed the Veterans and 1st Responders Memorial Park clean-up day on Saturday morning, May 25, and the Veterans Appreciation Day on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, starting with a breakfast at the Emanuel County Medical Center at 9 a.m. and a ceremony at the Veterans and 1st Responders Memorial Park at 11 a.m.
