The Veterans at the Library held their weekly meeting at the Franklin Memorial Library Monday morning, October 12, at 9 a.m. With Chair Johnny Tapley presiding, they had 40 in attendance. Shari Watt provided an outstanding breakfast consisting of sausage, pancakes, fruit, apple cake, orange juice, grape juice, cranberry juice, apple juice, and coffee. Shari introduced Sam Lawrence who contributed a check to the Wreaths Across America project for $1,250 that he raised in a project he formed to help put a wreath on the graves of veterans at Christmas time. Thanks so much to Sam for his patriotism! Shari then introduced Samantha Freeman and Tracy Boatright. Samantha is the Radiologist at Emanuel Medical Center who talked about Mammograms and Breast Awareness, and the warning signs for breast cancer.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month so ask your medical provider to submit a referral to Emanuel Medical Center for your mammogram…female or male. Emanuel Medical Center uses state-of-the-art mammography equipment that can detect cancer up to 12 months earlier than conventional equipment.
The Veterans presented Samantha with a check for $1,000.00 out of the Veterans Cup Golf account to be used to help pay for those that cannot afford the mammograms themselves. Veterans are also challenging other companies and individuals to also donate to this worthwhile project at EMC.
Chair Johnny then called on WAA fundraiser Chair Gary Mason for a special presentation. Gary presented the Veterans with a check for $500.00 from Chapman Funeral Home to be used for Wreaths on the graves of veterans. Be sure and thank Billy, Brice and Brandon Chapman when you see them for their special contribution.
Everyone is invited to the special dedication of the new Veterans Wall on November 7, at 10 a.m. at the Veterans and 1st Responders Memorial Park and the dedication of the “Liberty Tree Monument” by the Wiregrass Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution at the same time.
Veterans will be feeding grilled hotdogs to all the participants at the 250th Emanuel County Historical Preservation Society event on Saturday, October 17, at the Museum across from the fairgrounds starting from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Skunk Brigade will have six cannons firing starting at 10 a.m. on the hour until 4 p.m. with their Travelin Trunks set up.
