Helen Freeman Coleman, 81

Helen Freeman Coleman, age 81, of Canoochee passed away Friday, May 29, 2026, surrounded by her family and friend. Memorial Service will be Thursday, June 4, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Chapman Funeral Home with Mr. Alan Braswell officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Chapman Funeral Home. The family will be gathering at the home of Jenny and Jody Gibson, 215 McKenzie Dr. in Swainsboro, and are welcoming friends.

Helen was born April 8, 1945, in Swainsboro, to the late Ollie Freeman, Sr. and Leola Slater Freeman. When she was in the eighth grade, she went to lunch at school and her eyes met with a senior boy named Luther Eddie Coleman. To hear her tell it, it was love at first sight for her. One day six years later, one of Helen’s friends asked her to go on a blind date. Helen asked who with. The friend said Eddie Coleman and Helen flipped out. They went on that first date and married four months later on September 18, 1965. In 1966, they welcomed their first child, Melissa. In 1968, they welcomed their second child Angela, but God decided he needed her more. In 1970, they welcomed their first and only son, Tim. In 1972, they welcomed their last child and their “Baby Girl”, Jenny. Together, the five made a wonderful life. They bought a farm in Canoochee where they lived their lives together. In the early years, you could find Helen hunting or fishing. She could also be found driving the getaway truck for Tim and his friends to night hunt. Helen loved the outdoors and all flowers. She was a master cook.

Helen and Eddie went on to have many grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom they loved dearly. In 2018, Helen lost the love of her life. To hear Helen tell it, Eddie sent straight from Heaven a blonde headed blue eyed little boy for her to love. That little boy was the light of her life. He was the only grandchild or great-grandchild to give her name GiGi.

Around 2023 Helen’s health started to decline. She started staying with her daughter, Jenny, son-in-love, Jody, and their daughter, Gracie most of the time. As her health worsened, she stayed with them for the rest of her life. Her and her son-in-love called it her penthouse suite. Mrs. Coleman is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Luther Eddie Coleman; son, Timothy Edward Coleman; and daughter, Angela Ann Coleman.

Mrs. Coleman is survived by her daughters, Jenny Gibson (Jody) of Swainsboro and Missy Oglesby of Canoochee; brother, Ollie Freeman, Jr. (Cindy) of Wadley; sister, Mot Cox (John) of Louisville; brother and sister-in-law, Emmit and Annette Coleman of Harlem; grandchildren, Lucas Smith, Haley Robinson (Monte), Matthew Smith (Emily), Gracie Gibson, Amy Estes (Jacob Palmquist), Erin White (Ben Wheeler), Ricky Bustamonte (Shelby Dakota), Eddie Coleman (Shontel Elders) and Justin Coleman; great-grandchildren, Liam Robinson, Lakelynn Robinson, Brayden Smith, Dixie Smith, Addie Smith, Sara Estes (Evan Herrington), Nate Estes, Jonah Estes, Vincent Palmquist, Carter Bustamonte, Isabelle Bustamonte, Grace Beach, Maggie Jo Beach and Scarlett Wheeler; several nieces, nephews and many friends.
