By SEN. BILLY HICKMAN

We are officially more than halfway through the 2024 Legislative Session. While we have enjoyed a robust first half of legislative work, plenty of meaningful work lies ahead.

We’ve been hard at work in session, and as February progresses, we’re swiftly approaching the pivotal Crossover Day on February 29th. For those unfamiliar, Crossover Day marks the deadline for a bill to pass one chamber to be considered in the other, underscoring its importance in the legislative process. If a bill doesn’t make it through, it’s effectively stopped until the next year, adding another layer of urgency to our deliberations.

In the spirit of celebration, we started the week on a high note commemorating “Georgia Day.” It’s a moment to reflect on our rich history, tracing back 291 years ago to James Oglethorpe’s landing in Savannah, laying the foundation for the vibrant state we call home.

On the legislative front, I’m proud to have sponsored Senate Resolution 470, establishing a study committee dedicated to preserving Georgia’s vital farmlands. With agriculture being the backbone of our economy and a vital part of our identity, safeguarding our agricultural heritage is paramount.

I also commend my colleague, Sen. Bo Hatchett (R-Cornelia), for his efforts to safeguard our children from online predators. He is introducing legislation to close loopholes surrounding AI-generated explicit material and restrict sex offenders from owning drones that could endanger our children. It’s a vital measure that would ensure the safety and well-being of our communities.

Additionally, we’ve made strides in housing security with the passage of Senate Bill 349, which limits annual property tax assessment increases to no more than 3%. This measure aims to provide relief and stability for homeowners across the state, particularly in these challenging times.

On a personal note, I celebrated a milestone with my beloved Jo Ann—our wedding anniversary. Her unwavering support is the bedrock of my endeavors, and I’m profoundly grateful for her love and companionship.

As always, I extend my deepest gratitude to each and every one of you for your continued support and encouragement. Your voices fuel our work, and together, we’re shaping Georgia into the best place to live, work, and raise a family. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if I can be of service to you.

Sen. Billy Hickman serves as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Higher Education. He represents the 4th Senate District which includes Bulloch, Candler, Effingham, Evans, and a small portion of Chatham County. He may be reached at 404.463.1371 or via email at [email protected].
