Deacon James “Henry” Hampton, Sr., age 87, peacefully transitioned to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 9, 2024, surrounded by family.

Henry was born on August 4, 1936, in Swainsboro, to the late Deacon Clifton (Buddy) Hampton and Mother Sadie Hampton. As a member of Williams Chapel Holiness Church, he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age. Henry was also ordained as a Deacon at an early age. He was gifted with a wonderful singing voice and was a member of The Union Gospel Singers. Henry enjoyed glorifying the Lord through praise and worship and he lived a life steadfast in the word of God. He always carried himself in an upright and Godly way, demonstrating a strong yet gentle character. Henry had a kind spirit and was genuinely loving, caring, generous and a friend to all; always quick to offer a helping hand with a smile. On June 5, 1959, Henry obtained favor from the Lord when he united in Holy Matrimony with the love of his life, Rosa Mae Moore. To this union, they were blessed with four children. Henry and Rosa were a devoted couple and model parents to their children. Henry was employed by the State of Georgia where he worked at The Ogeechee Clinic until his retirement in 2011.Prior to the Ogeechee Clinic, he worked at Citizens Bank for 20+ years. Henry was also skilled at maintaining lawns and meticulously manicuring shrubs. At his home, his yard showcased beautifully trimmed azaleas, rose bushes and other varieties of plants and flowers. Henry was a servant to his community and would often express his love for living in Swainsboro. Many who know him (or know of him) call him “Good Man”, “Distinguished Gentleman” or “Icon to the Community”. Henry was truly the epitome of a good and faithful servant. Deacon Hampton is preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Rosa Mae Moore; brothers, John Powell and Rosevelt Hampton; and sister, Sarah Outler.

Loving memories will forever be cherished by two sons, Derald Moore Hampton (Hilda) of Sebastian, FL and James Henry Hampton, Jr. of Swainsboro; two daughters, Gloria Faye Hampton of Swainsboro and Margaret Delaine Hampton Wright of Jacksonville, FL; three grandchildren, Corey Dwayne Johnson of Daytona Beach, FL, Demetrius Lovell Johnson of Seattle, WA and Whitney LaFaye Fedderick (Christopher) of Columbus; five sisters, Mary Fowler (Clyde) of Summertown, Fannie Boynton, Alpha “Affie” Johnson, Pearl Boykin (Thomas), all of Swainsboro, and Doris Hargrove (Calvin) of Levittown, PA; sister-in-law, Ruthie James of Conyers; twenty-two grandchildren; forty-five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mosley Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.
