After a very hot summer, finally, “Fall is Calling.” That means it is time for garden club members to start gathering to begin a new year. Seedling Garden Club held its first meeting on Monday, September 9, at the social hall of Swainsboro Methodist Church.
President Nancy Lisenby called the meeting to order at 5:30 pm and welcomed everyone. She gave a very inspirational moment titled; “Importance of Starting a Garden.” We all start gardens, we plant, grow and sow with God’s help.
The meeting began with committee reports and officer reports. Yonna Bailey, Yard of the Month chairman, reported that the beautiful yard of Tracy and Luke Scott was given the September Yard of the Month. Secretary Amber Albritten had no report due to the club’s summer break. Kay Peacock gave the treasurer’s report. This was approved as presented. Paula Karrh gave a very informative September Horticulture Tips report. This included things to do now that the weather is cooler, and we have lots of things we can do like, planting, sowing seeds, divide and transplant plants and fertilizing. Good time to plant fall vegetables. She stated that most of her tips come from an old Statesboro Garden Club garden book. Members always look forward to these horticulture tips. During the horticulture tips moment, Nancy Lisenby shared a newly harvested Loffa. She grew the loffa from a plant she planted. She stated, “the plant is a vine, has pretty yellow flowers and when ready for harvest it has to be shucked to get to the loffa. People use the loffa for bathing. A very interesting looking plant.
A formal program was not presented due to the importance of making plans for the new year. Under old business, a review of fundraising auction procedures and additional options for fundraising was discussed and a study will be done on this. This is the only money-making project the club has. Yard of the month guidelines were reviewed and recommendations for changes were made.

Under new business, president Lisenby encouraged members to attend the Oleander District Annual Meeting to be held at The Landings in Savannah on October 16, 2024. The club voted to contribute a basket to be auctioned off at this meeting. We are also supposed to bring collected tabs to this meeting. These go to support the Ronald McDonald houses in Georgia. The planters at Emanuel Nursing Home were voted on and approved as a project for the club. Members will plant the planters as seasons change. Members were reminded of the Moon Tree Party on September 10 that was held at East Georgia College to celebrate the loblolly pine tree planted at the Sudie Fulford Center. Seeds were taken into space and around the moon in 2022. They planted them and grew a Loblolly pine. So, the tree is called the Moon Tree. Very interesting!
Lucille Braswell and Nancy Lisenby served as hostesses for the meeting. The 14 members present were served pimento cheese and chicken salad sandwiches, nuts, key lime cupcakes and soda. The table was decorated for Fall.
The meeting was adjourned with Lucille Braswell winning the door prize. President Lisenby gave a big “Welcome Back” as members adjourned.
