Swainsboro High School FCCLA traveled to Athens on March 17, to compete at the State Leadership Conference. These members worked hard on their STAR Events projects for months in preparation for their competition. In order for these members to compete at the State Leadership Conference, they had to place in the top two at their region competition. Lashunta Shanks and Ansley Turner competed in Food Innovations, where they had to create a healthy snack that followed certain nutritional guidelines. They ended up coming up with a snack called Peanut Butter Bites. Shanks and Turner earned a gold medal and came in sixth place with their project. Tykerria Phillips and Jakayla Coleman competed in Public Policy Advocate, where they had to choose a local issue and research and publicize it to make a difference. The local issue these members decided to research was nutritional disparities in lower-income households. Phillips and Coleman earned a silver medal and came in sixth place. Lastly, Gabbi Hayes competed in the Teach or Train competition. For this competition, she had to create lesson plans and teach an actual lesson to a class. Hayes earned a silver medal and placed fifth in her event. All of these members competed against numerous other students from all around the state of Georgia.
