Lucy was born February 18, 1939, in Summertown, at home to Sara and Arlie Marsh, to the late Arlie Lee Marsh and Sara Rich. She weighed a little over 1 pound and could fit in a shoebox. Lucy graduated high school and thru a friend, met Jimmie Amerson, whom she married after six weeks—much to her momma’s dismay. She had four children, losing a son when he was only seven years old. Lucy worked at Smith-Powell Hospital, Dr. Guzman’s office, and finally worked at home keeping children which was her passion. She started going to Hillcrest Baptist Church in the late 1960s where she grew in faith and servitude. Lucy served faithfully in the nursery for years. She became affectionately known as “MeMa”—not only to her grandchildren, but to every child she met.
Lucy loved to bake coconut and pecan pies, loved to cook Wednesday lunch “so the boys would come”, and weekday breakfasts. She loved to fish and loved to sew and make baby quilts for about half of Emanuel County. Lucy studied the Bible, often writing verses to commit them to memory. She was the most patient, humble, selfless person. While we will miss her here, we rejoice knowing she’s with her Lord. Mrs. Amerson is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jimmie Amerson; son, Jimmie Amerson, Jr.; grandson, Joseph Allen Amerson, Jr.; great-grandson, Ryker Charles Brinson; brother, Bobby G. Marsh; and son-in-law, Billy Brinson, Sr.
